RAF Cardington Camp

V.J. Day RAF Cardington 15th & 16th Aug 1945.

Evening News VJ Day

Along with the rest of the country V.J. celebrations at RAF Cardington were spread over two days.

VJ ORB report

The celebrations were recorded in the daily records (O.R.Bs) shown above. They read as follows:

"15.08.1945 V. J. DAY. A dance was held in the evening on the Station Gymnasium. Station Headquarters Building, The Gymnasium and the Guardroom were all floodlit. And the Met Tower and Guardroom Building were picked out in fairy lights.

16.08.1945 V.J. DAY PLUS ONE. Comic sports were held in the Gymnasium which were well attended, and in the evening the Sergeant’s Mess gave a V.J. dance in the Gymnasium."

Sadly I have never seen any photographs of any of the V.J. celebrations at the station. At the same time the station had begun functioning as a demob centre and was welcoming back thousands of RAF personnel from Europe so the station was exceptionally busy. It would be wonderful to find anyone who had been at the station on such a happy occasion. If you have any photos or information please get in touch. - Thanks. Jane
